Whatever Official Language You Speak, Take the Unofficial (Possibility City) Census

August 24th, 2009 by admin | See what 87 other Friends of Lou had to say about this.

horse-1This week and next week Louisville once again becomes the bona fide mise en scene for aficionados of worldliness (vide infra). From bon vivants to hoi polloi, Possibility City will become the ne plus ultra for tout le monde.

Which got us to wondering just how many different nationalities were represented in Louisville? With more than 60 languages spoken in the schools here and 50 percent of the city’s population growth over the past 15 years coming from international residents, Louisville is more culturally diverse than ever.

So we figured we’d just run our own poll and ask — Where in the World Are You From?

Add your answer in the comment section below. Spice up your answer a bit, and we’ll even send a few lucky folks a little je ne sais quoi (French for luggage tags).

Until next time, mes amis, get your possibility on.

Take the Possibility City Census (just add your reply in the box right below this)

I’m from Canada. That piece of land to the north. Maker of great syrup, poutine and. . . well, that is about it!

  2. Pip says:

Innit. I’m from England: Cor blimey; luvvaduck; knock it on the ‘ead; spot of tea, guvnah?, etc.

  5. Val says:

I am originally from Illinois. Also home of Abe Lincoln, Barack Obama and… Oprah of course.

  6. Susan says:

Born and raised in Kentucky, with the exception of college. My siblings and I all went away to school, had great opportunities elsewhere upon graduation, yet we all ended up back in Possibility City because we love it and cannot imagine a better life elsewhere. It’s a fine place to call “home.” Say, is that an American Saddlebred horse in that picture? I’m impressed. You are certainly on top of it to know THAT breed of horse was born and raised here, too.

  7. Andy says:

I am from Auburn, home of the Duesenberg (phrase- “it’s a Duesey”) We’re tucked in the NE corner of Indiana, stones through to Michigan and Ohio.

  8. Laura says:

Born and raised right here in Kentuckiana. Had a brief stay in Tennessee as a baby (3 mos to 3 years) and the Indy area from age 3-5 … back to Kentuckiana before turning 6 and have been here ever since.

  9. Mark says:

I am originally from St. Louis. I married Louisville when I married one of her natives. Still love the Lou, but I am happy to be in the Ville.

  10. Susan says:

I’m from New Hampshire (wicked cool, pahk the cah in Hahvahd Yahd) by way of Chicago (da Bearz!). But so far, loving it here in Louisville!

  11. Trisha says:

I’m from Ohio (Possum Holler to be exact) Surely this counts as diverse and surely you can see why I escaped to Louisville?

  12. Julie says:

Born in Winter Gardens, Florida moved here when I was three. Have lived in Bowling Green, Brooklyn and Chicago but as Sinead says “nothing compares to you” Lou….

  13. Cheryl says:

Born and raised in Kentucky. BUT….does being from Okolona count for something???? That has to be a “nationality/region” all on its own! But, hey….be nice! I graduated from Southern High School and turned out ok!! :*)

  14. Sheila Goodpaster-Troyer says:

I was born & reared in God’s country, about 100 miles south of Louisville, in Columbia, KY–located in between Green River & Lake Cumberland. I would still be there today except the University of Louisville is located here. So when I came to U. of Lou. to school, I never left–Go CARDS!!

  15. Kirsten says:

Hmm. Where am I from? Born in Denmark, lived in North Carolina and Indiana before being raised in Orlando, Florida. Arrived here a year and a half ago and am now a proud Louisvillian (the folks at the chamber said that as soon as I could pronounce Louisvillian I could call myself one :-) ). Thanks for welcoming me into this great city!

  16. Emily says:

I’m originally from Shelton, CT which is the home of the Wiffle Ball. Funny, I now live in a place that’s famous for bats.

Originally from London, UK, however most recently moved from Colorado! :)

German/German on my father’s, some Nazis, 16th century knapsack makers. N. Great Uncle Benjamin Franklin Wadsack of KS.
A site came and went before I could take detailed notes showing a Spanish ancestor from the Canary Islands.
Ancestors on both sides of The Late Unpleasantness.
Born in KS, raised in OK. The 13 young adult years I spent in LSVL still has the record for any one city. Since then rural KY, AL, NJ, and WI, now TX this century.

  20. Amy says:

Originally from Florida (home of beaches, sunshine, oranges, Gators, Tom Petty and oh yeah, hurricanes!). Traded all that for bluegrass, rolling hills, bourbon, Churchill Downs, great people (oh yeah, and ice storms-wait! am I crazy?!). Not crazy, just found a better place!

  21. Lisa says:

I AM FROM THE VILLE. BEAUTIFUL WOMEN, FAST HORSES AND THE BEST BOURBON TO TOUCH YOUR LIPS,PASS THE GRITS.

  22. D.B. says:

I am from Anderson County, KY by way of Seattle by way of San Diego. After 8 years, I got tired and came back to my old KY home about 2 years ago. Those left coast cities don’t have anything on Louisville.

  23. Lois Esrey says:

Born and raised in Chicago…but this is home!

  24. Monica says:

Born and raised right in beautiful Louisville, KY had to move away 6 years ago to Central Florida for the benefit of my family BUT I’ll always say you can take the girl out of Kentucky but you’ll NEVER take the Kentucky out of the girl…..sooooooo homesick……Luv the Ville!!!!!!!!

  25. Kelley says:

West Virginia, Jeffersonville, a brief foray to East Central Indiana, and back to Louisville I am. Not too interested in going anywhere else.

  26. Sara says:

As for me, I’m from a city that the rest of Kentucky regards as a place of uppity ‘city folk.’ Born and raised in southern Louisville (which is a nice way of saying Fairdale), I’ve lived here for all of my 25 years – except for a very brief stint in Sicily. I’ve come to love our charming neighborhoods, friendly people and best-tasting water! I’ve also come to expect that we’ll experience freak weather disasters on a regularly basis and the spaghetti junction should forever be avoided during rush hour!

  27. Julie says:

As the daughter of an Army man, I was born in Virginia. Home for my parents was always Louisville so we moved to “The Ville” in the mid-60′s and I’ve been here since. It’s an awesome place to work and play!!!

  28. Bev says:

I am from the ‘Ville more specifically Lively Shively. I sometimes have the exaggerated long /i/ like many Southerners and have difficulty distinguishing my short /e/ from the short /i/.

  29. Sue says:

i came her from Denver Colorado, by way of Indianapolis, and I love it here! If only something could be done about the humidity …

  30. Sarah says:

I was born and raised right here, in Louisville. However, I do go to Indiana University in Bloomington currently. But I plan on coming back home after graduation because I love this place!

  31. Jeff says:

Moi? I was born in Memphis, but have lived in Texas, Ohio, and Illinois (where I currently reside). However, I speak French and Spanish…donc je trouve Louisville une vraie étoile, et j’adore visiter! ;-)

  33. Marcie says:

Born and raised in Michigan where we drink “pop” not “coke”, home of upper and lower penisulas and the phrase: I’m heading Up North for the weekend!

  34. Hi. I was born and raised in Ohio ( Salem) but moved here in 1985. I am now considered an adoptee of Louisville and will never look back.

  35. Laura says:

I’m from right here in the ‘ville. I moved away for a little over six years – Tampa/Clearwater, DC, and Dallas – and then decided there truly IS no place like home. I always describe it to folks as having a little bit of everything, not a lot of anything, but easy to live (for sure!) and an easy place to get other places from (though not by plane, unfortunately).

  36. Bob says:

Born In South Bend Indiana. Speak English and made Studebakers.

  37. Steve Kirn says:

Born and raised in Louisville, but just passed the 16 year mark here in the NW ‘burbs of Chicago, where we know how to say “sassage” and “Bearz”; home to the world headquarters of Boeing — or “Boing” as Mayor Daley says it; the newly renamed Willis Tower (nee Sears Tower), or “Big Willie” as it’s coming to be known, much to the delight of our Brit friends; the El; O’Hare delays; hot dogs the way they were meant to be prepared (Secret ingredient: celery salt, and NEVER with ketchup, unless you’re a 3-year-old); Chicago-style pizza; Cubbies and Sax (Sox to you folks down there). There’s a whole way of talking, and it calls for unlearning some of the more genteel, Southern pronunciations from Possibility City. But I’m working on it — so I’ll have it down when I finally move back home!

  38. David says:

From the Land of “ahs”, otherwise known as Kansas. Louisville has been home for 30 years.

  39. Shell says:

Scottish/Irish origin. Born and raised in Louavull, have lived in Thailand, PRChina, Texas and Colorado. Wo hui shuo putonghua. Je parle francais. Pud Thai mai Kha nitnoy. Yo hablo espanol un pequito. In high school and college worked for the Heritage festivals in the ‘ville, best time to chow down besides the KY State Fair.

  40. Bev says:

Born and raised in our great city. Thought about leaving at one point, never did…this is home. Good nice people who are not afraid to be kind to strangers, our car broke down off the watterson a couple of months ago a guy pulled up had it running in minutes with a wave of his hand, he was gone…(a wire had slipped off some part)Just one example of why I love my hometown

  41. Boots says:

I am from Bowling Green. Home of the Corvette and Duncan Hines.
I moved here in 1997 and Love it!!!

  42. Jessica Dawkins says:

I grew up on a hog farm in Indiana, in the middle of nowhere with no one and nothin’ but satellite television (which is evil for a child surrounded by corn & pigs, only being able to see the outside world through our old console and never experience it). But thankfully I set my alarm for 7:30 the morning after I graduated high school and moved my life to Louisville! The lush, green, wooded, open-minded, friendliest, anything and everything is possible city! And I’ve been here ever since…

  43. Christine says:

Born in Gulfport, Mississippi, and moved here at 4. Moved to Atlanta for a short time, and came back a year ago. I know now more than ever that Louisville is the place for me. I really learned to apprecitate it when I was gone. I used to say that there was never anything to do here, and after going away and coming back, m appreciation for this city has made me realize HOW MUCH thre really IS to do here. I’ll never leave again!

  44. Darcy says:

    Mass. – Go Red Sox

  45. john says:

I grew up in Frankfort, Kentucky and have lived in Charleston, SC, Orlando, FL, Lexington, KY and I have just returned to Louisville after three years in London, England!

  46. Carol says:

I was born right here in Louisville, but was whisked quickly away to Birmingham, AL. I was raised in the deep South and I am most definitely a Southerner – all that y’all stuff, ya know. Even after having been in Louisville for at least 28 years, I still feel like I’m from a foreign country. I mean what is it with y’all that you don’t know how to use a turn signal, anyway? It’s just not polite!

  47. Dhiane Bradley says:

I was born and raised in the land downunder (Melbourne, Australia), and although Louisville has been my home for 12 years now, I am still a Vegemite kid at heart! I especially like to tell people that I am a “real southerner”. Most get the connection, but some just look at me like I’m truly speaking another language. :)

  48. Rick says:

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, now a Louvillian, speak English, Spanish, Spanglish and uh…..Southern? Y’all be cool now k?

  49. Deborah says:

I am the product of a military family, so by the time I was in 9th grade I had moved 4 times to 4 different states. However, Louisville opened it arms and accepted me and now I have a place to call home!

  50. david hogan says:

I was told I was born at Ephraim McDowell hospital in Danville, KY and that’s what my birth certificate and a newspaper clipping I found in my baby book says – but I think they’re fake. I have heard rumours that this sort of thing was rampant amongst mothers in the 1950′s and early 1960′s who had much higher aspirations for their sons than most. Perhaps I was actually born a Kennedy in MA to further the line but things just didn’t work out.
Regardless, I do remember starting Kindergarten in Birmingham, AL, 2nd grade in a suburb of Latonia, KY, and the 9th grade in Louisville. Except for an extended period away in college (with all its attendant side excursions) have been here since.
