Psssst . . . Can You Keep a Louisville Secret?

September 1st, 2009 by admin | See what 18 other Friends of Lou had to say about this.

Can You Keep a Secret?20000_button
If you can, that’s good to know. But that’s the exact opposite of what we need Friends of Lou to do.

You know Louisville. You know what we’re talking about. But loads of people aren’t as lucky — so we’re asking for your help.

Recruit-a-Friend-of-Lou Month doesn’t sound cool enough for a place called Possibility City, so we’re calling September’s month-long recruitment campaign the Friend of Lou-a-thon.

Our goal is to recruit 20,000 members. (Sounds like a lot, but we’ve got a head start and already have over 16,000.) Anyway, here’s where you come in. . . .

Start Spreading the Word
We need your help finding everyone who loves Louisville. If you want some ideas, try a few of these:

  1. Update your Twitter and Facebook status to say, “I’m a Friend of Lou, Why aren’t you? http://friendoflou.com” (or something like that).
  2. Send an email to everyone you know proclaiming your love for Louisville. And while you’re at it, ask them to become a Friend of Lou, too.
  3. Add “If you love Louisville, you’ll love being a Friend of Lou. http://friendoflou.com” to your email signature.

Since everyone loves to be in the know, we thought we’d share a sneak-peek of a work-in-progress. We’ve started to gather some of Louisville’s well-known — and not-so-well-known — talking heads.

And you guessed it: they’re Friends of Lou, too.

See if you recognize all of them, and keep an eye out for the full-length video coming later this month.

Thank you in advance for loving Louisville and helping us share this great city of possibilities far and wide. And remember: There’s no point having a secret if you can’t share it with someone.

    Alright already!!!!!! I signed up.

  2. Pip says:

We have problems, for sure, but compared to a host of other comparable cities, I’d much rather live here.

  3. Martha Spurlock says:

    Hello, Lou!

  4. Jackie Thompson says:

Louisville is just an overgrown town. People are narrow minded and not accepting of new ideas and cultural changes. But Louisvillians can make some damn good chicken.

  5. Redbird says:

    Chuck:

if you’ve been that unhappy for 30 years, don’t like the employment climate, and have a college degree….. one has to wonder, why don’t you move???

  6. Wendy says:

This is a pretty average place, Chuck, but you sound like a real whiny loser. I don’t think you would stand much of a chance in any city. You must be a sad and lonely person.

  7. Donna says:

Chuck has problems. Seems no one will hire him. Suggest he move & quit wasting his time threatening to do so. I moved back to Louisville after being employed in 4 other major cities and doing business in many more, & I have friends who have done the same. And neither education nor race (Chuck complained of the KKK & white eastend)has much to do with job/city satisfaction: my 3 kids & I have between 1-3 degrees each & all have done quite well in Louisville. Yes, the unions & foreign competition drove industry from Louisville, as they did nationally. And yes, politics here have been dismal, the mayor tiring, & the police very quick-triggered, and it was dumb to put the Arena downtown (strictly political)– but none of this does little to diminish the quality & friendliness of the people, the churches or neighborhoods or the beauty of Kentucky.
Move on, Up-Chuck. Time to go.

  8. Brett says:

Hmmmm. . . . What does this button do?

  9. [...] week we sent you a sneak peek of the new Friend of Lou promotional spots, coming to a monitor near you [...]

  10. Todd says:

call me crazy but something tells me chuck wasn’t the class clown… well, ain’t no use debatin’ with gratuitous hatin’. we take the bad with the good, in louisville, in any city, in life itself. i think the campaign is just trying to focus on what we do have going for us, which is a lot, and energize people around that. what’s to criticize? what should we do, launch a campaign to point out all the things that suck? so chuck, get on board or get the f*** outta here ;-)

  11. Dolly says:

Every place has it’s ups and downs, not just Louisville. Each has it’s problems and good points. Large cities, small towns, rural areas. Nothing can be accomplished without at least trying to put a positive foot forward. Jobs are being lost everywhere. Sometimes you just have to accept that nothing can be changed but yourself.
Never go so far away from home that your heart can never get back.

“Listen to your heart. Never stop listening.”
    Henry Quick Bear, Lakota

  12. donna says:

Hey Chuckie — Who cares, really, about the growth that you bemoan? Louisville was smaller when I got here & may be smaller when I leave. There is a lot to value in a city of any size. I hope you have learned by now, Size Doesn’t Matter.
Have you ever heard of a fellow named Thomas Paine? Probably not, but he once said “Lead, follow or get out of the way.” You complain about leadership but are obviously not a leader. You have stressed that you do not want to follow — so, go ahead Chuck, get out of the way. Go. Get. Go way.

  13. Mark from Beyond says:

“When the end of the world comes, I want to be in Kentucky, because everything there happens 20 years after it happens anywhwere else.”

    Mark Twain

  14. Kalantan says:

I’m sorry to say, that’s the case with me: I moved away 15 years ago to find any semblance of a career opportunity. I returned last year to take care of family only to find the local job market even less friendly to white-collar workers than when I left.

I wish I had a reason to disagree with Chuck, but at the moment I don’t. I wish that would change, but as it stands, when my family obligations end, so too will my residence here…

  15. Dolly says:

If there are those of you who feel Louisville has nothing to offer try changing it from within.

A bitter and unhappy countenance only makes you bitter and unhappy. It doesn’t solve anything.

Add your input to what you feel is missing. There are other places which have far less but the issue is happiness comes from within not from geography.

The grass always seems to look greener on the other side of the fence but then sometimes you find no grass at all.

Never go so far away from home that your heart can never back.

  16. Chris says:

I like the fact that Louisville is at least trying to market itself though these activites exist on a greater level and with much greater diversity in other cities.

Louisville has setup itself up as a great weekend, regional destination but not a great place to live; unfortunate, since I lived in Louisville for 20 years and would still live in Louisville if there were ‘possibilities’.

Unfortunately, the brain drain is alive and well in Louisville as witnessed by the average wage and the number of white collar professional jobs that exist.

Anyone interested in seeing where the city and state rank in indices that people read should look to the ‘Best Places to Live’ by Money, ‘Wellness Index’ by Gallup, ‘Best Busines Climate’, and others will give you the areas Louisville and KY need to work on in order to not be so laughable.

Until then, keep living in ingorant bliss.

  17. Russ says:

    People, Chuck is right.

Sorry to tell you, but he is spot-on.

The economic base here (especially for those with college degrees)is virtually non-existant.

    Russ

  18. James says:

Why did the powers that be ban Chuck because he was telling the truth about what really goes on here.
