Louisville 2010: What was Possible Here?

December 20th, 2010 by admin | See what 11 other Friends of Lou had to say about this.

That Time of Year
It’s that time of year when people make lists. Things to buy. Gifts they want. Places to go. So it should come as no surprise that there is a list of the events from 2010 that remind us all that Louisville really is “Possibility City.” Or, to put it another way, events and occurrences that demonstrate that no matter who you are … where you’re from … or what your interests and aspirations might be … it’s possible here!

Of course, every list needs a winner. This is where you come in our fine friend. Look over the various examples of Louisville’s can-do attitude and choose the one that best represents what makes Louisville the best city in the world. (And don’t be a stranger, you can keep coming back to the poll to vote as many times as you want.)

And the Nominees Are:

  • Louisville opens its new KFC Yum! Center – a $238 million state-of-the-art sports arena.  It’s a defiantly can-do gesture in the face of the worst recession in a generation.
  • Eastern Kentucky native Monica Marks comes to Louisville and becomes the first female U of L student to be named a Rhodes Scholar.
  • USA Today names Slugger Field as one of nation’s 10 best minor league baseball parks in April 2010.  Of course, we’ve known this since they opened its doors 10 years ago.

  • The St. James Court Art Show lands in the Top 10 of American Style Magazine’s sixth-annual Fairs & Festivals poll.

Louisville Wins Tongue and Cheek Competition

November 12th, 2010 by admin | See what 25 other Friends of Lou had to say about this.

A Place Where Cows, Pigs, Lambs, Ducks, and Halibut Can All Work Together
On November 7, Edward Lee, owner / chef of Louisville’s 610 Magnolia, smoked the competition on “Iron Chef America.” Brooklyn-transplant chef Lee kept the secret ingredients for his dishes — tongue and cheek — a secret from the dozens of friends and co-workers who gathered at a private loft party in Louisville to watch the show when it was broadcast on the Food Network last weekend. Lee’s dishes — a cow tongue Reuben, duck tongue tempura, halibut cheek, and lamb tongue with pork cheek arancini — won over the judges, and he soundly defeated Iron Chef José Garces.

Will Vote for Food
From nationally celebrated eateries — like Proof on Main, Toast on Market, the Blind Pig, Seviche, Basa Modern, Lilly’s, Lynn’s Paradise Café, Jack Fry’s, Blue Dog Bakery and Café, and Social — to locally cherished jewels — like Café Lou Lou, Mambo Cuban Cuisine, Baxter Station, 211 Clover Lane, Asiatique, Le Relais, the Brown Hotel, De La Torres, Wiltshire on Market, and Vietnam Kitchen, to name just a few — the range and quality of dining here is (as foodies say) to die for.

And to do our little bit to share the love, here’s this month’s quiz:

Where’s the best local place to take an out-of-town guest to eat dinner for under $50?

Louisville Welcomes the Coolest Two Weeks in Sports

August 20th, 2010 by admin | See what 1 other Friend of Lou had to say about this.

Seventy-Five Miles from All the World-Class Action — in Either Direction
If you didn’t know the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games were coming to Lexington in just 36 days, then either you don’t live in Kentucky . . . or you don’t live anywhere else on the planet. Because the Games are huge. They’re massive. They’re global. And anyone who knows anything about sport knows the world’s about to arrive on our doorstep.

Saddle up, Possibilitators: the World Equestrian Games are upon us. And although all the equine action takes place away from Louisville, we’re expecting the human action to head west for some supplemental recreation and entertainment.

Lexington’s Got the Games . . . and Louisville’s Got the Fun
Louisville’s no stranger to international accommodation — what with the Derby, the Breeders’ Cup, the Ryder Cup, and one of the world’s top-six hotels (among many other things, of course) — so we’re looking forward to sharing some of our city’s riches with this incredible gathering of sports fans and their families. Here’s a list of just a few of the nationally and internationally recognized things going on in Possibility City during the Games:

  • Kentucky Opera Opening Gala
  • IdeaFestival
  • St. James Court Art Show
  • Concours d’Elegance Car Show
  • Actors Theatre “The Mystery of Irma Vep”

Different Courses for Different Horses
September 25 – October 10 | This is the very first time the Games have EVER been held outside Europe. So if you want to head to Lexington and see the world’s greatest equestrian athletes competing at the very highest level, you’ll be witnessing something never seen before on American soil. To learn about the individual events, which include Dressage, Driving, Endurance, Eventing, Jumping, Para Dressage, Reining, and Vaulting, click here to visit the Games’s site.

Tickets are available online by clicking here.
